Many of these increased costs for proposed services could be covered without raising property taxes in Weber County if the Commission would initiate and support an increase in the penalty and interest on unpaid and delinquent property taxes in the State of Utah (over $120 Million) a year, we could fund many things in the state and county. These well healed tax scofflaws defer their taxes for almost 5 years since the penalties and interest are so low in Utah. In the meantime, you the normal taxpayer who pays these property taxes on time will be asked to pay more for these services because the County Commissioners and others in the State what to provide a financial incentive for business and large property owners without regard for all the other property taxpayers. The increased penalties and interest could mean an additional tax flow of about 3 million dollars every year in Weber County. The Commissioners have been aware of this for over 6 years and will not support an increase in the penalties and interest. This would not effect hardship cases since the County has a committee to review those cases every year.
