Pineview Water Systems is replacing the irrigation water siphon at the mouth of Ogden Canyon.  The following are planned construction activities.  

Please note that due to weather conditions, emergency situations or equipment/supply issues, schedules are subject to change.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS

·         Effective through project completion in April/May 2016, motorists should continue to expect minimal flagging operations on SR-39 at the mouth of the canyon. Restrictions will be effective during daylight hours, Monday through Saturday.  Traffic will be stopped intermittently in both directions for up to 15-minute intervals to accommodate construction equipment access and as a public safety precaution as suspended loads are being transported over the roadway.  The work schedule is largely weather-dependent. 

SCHEDULE

·         All sections of the new pipe have been installed and crews are painting the exterior of the pipe as weather allows.

·         The project team is preparing the pipe for pressure testing in order to ensure the pipe will be ready for irrigation season.

·         Once pressure testing is complete, the trolley system that was used for the removal and installation of the pipe will be disassembled and taken off site.

·         As the project wraps up, crews will begin restoring the construction site.

SAFETY

·         Although the pipe will soon be operational, the construction site will be active and off limits to the public as site restoration continues.

·         As a public safety precaution, crews want to remind hikers that all areas in the construction zone on both sides of the canyon are off limits.

·         All areas below the siphon that have been fenced off and signed are off limits to the public during construction.

·         Drivers are encouraged to follow all signs and flaggers through the work zone to promote public safety.  A protective highway cover has been built over SR-39 beneath the siphon.

CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE

Construction schedules are dependent on weather conditions, emergency situations or equipment/supply issues and are subject to change.

·         Preparations are being made to remove the existing pipe.  A protective highway cover has been built over SR-39 beneath the siphon and crews have begun construction of a set of towers that will facilitate the safe removal of the existing pipeline.  
·         The siphon will be drained and irrigation water will be shut off beginning October 1, 2015.  Removal of parts of the existing pipe could begin as soon as October 2, 2015.
·         The existing pipeline is scheduled to be removed by the end of November 2015 and construction of the new siphon will begin immediately thereafter.
·         The new siphon is scheduled to be operational by early April 2016.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS

·         Crews generally plan to work Monday through Friday, however, weekend work is likely as much of the work is weather-dependent.
·         Traffic impacts could begin as early as Oct. 2, 2015 and are expected to continue through early April 2016.
·         Lane closures and flagging operations should be expected on SR-39 at the mouth of the canyon throughout the project.  Traffic will be stopped intermittently in both directions for up to 15-minute intervals to accommodate construction equipment access.  Emergency access will be maintained.
·         Full road closures will be periodically scheduled with advance notice to motorists.
·         Drivers are encouraged to follow all signs and flaggers through the work zone to promote public safety.

Ogden Marathon Saturday

Saturday officially kicks off the 'every weekend let's bombard Ogden Valley with a big event' season, as the Ogden Marathon takes place throughout the valley and Ogden Canyon.

Plan your day (and the rest of the summer) accordingly folks, and avoid Ogden Canyon.

While the Ogden Marathon is one of the premier Marathons in the country, it is just one of the many events that offers lots of impact to our residents and doesn't give a lot in return.

Let us know what you think of the summer full of big races.

Canyon Closures today.

Tuesday, Aug. 19:  Crews will make preparations for the barrier removal Tuesday morning.  One-way traffic will be directed by flaggers from 8 a.m. to noon and motorists should expect up to 15-minute delays.   The canyon will then be fully closed (mouth of the canyon in Ogden to Pineview Dam) from noon to approximately 4 p.m. for barrier removal from the river.  This work will be coordinated with striping operations for the chip seal project so tentatively, they will both be done simultaneously.

As an alternate route, motorists may use SR-167, the Trappers Loop Highway via Interstate 84 through Weber Canyon.  The North Ogden Divide is open as well.

Ogden Canyon Construction Update

The following are planned activities for the UDOT chip seal project on SR-39 through Ogden Canyon between Harrison Blvd. in Ogden and Pineview Dam. Please note that due to weather conditions, emergency situations or equipment/supply issues, schedules are subject to change.

Due to equipment problems today, chip sealing operations on SR-39 have been extended intoSunday, Aug. 3 in the mid- to upper part of Ogden Canyon.

Sunday, Aug. 3:  One-way traffic will be directed by pilot car and motorists should expect up to 15-20 minute delays from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.  Crews plan to broom the mid-section of the canyon between approximately 5 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. and then chip seal operations will resume in the upper part of the canyon through approximately 6 p.m. for the final one to one and a half miles to Pineview Dam.

Motorists are encouraged to reduce driving speeds to help protect against vehicle damage from “fly rock,” which occurs when newly laid chips are driven over by vehicles at high speeds.  The roadway will be swept periodically over the next few days to remove loose rocks, but vehicles traveling at high speeds may cause new chips to dislodge and damage vehicles.

Aug. 4-5:  Once the new chip surface has been placed, an asphalt-based seal coat will be applied.  Weather permitting, one-way traffic will be directed by pilot car through the length of Ogden Canyon and motorists should expect up to 15-20 minute delays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday (Aug. 4) and Tuesday (Aug. 5).

Motorists with time sensitive travel should plan accordingly and consider alternate routes, such as SR-167, the Trappers Loop Highway via Interstate 84 through Weber Canyon, to expedite their trip.  Stakeholders with questions about this project can contact the project hotline at 801-419-9554.

More Paving of Ogden Canyon

Like Déjà Vu all over again, the canyon will be paved again this week.

Here are the details:

Change to Ogden Canyon Paving Scheduled for June 19-23

Scheduled total closure will now be from 8 p.m. on Saturday night through 8 p.m. on Sunday

Ogden -- The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises motorists that a short duration paving project will begin on state Road 39 in Ogden Canyon beginning June 19.

From Thursday night, June 19 through Tuesday morning, June 24, crews will be paving a section of SR-39, the Ogden Canyon Highway, from the Indian Trail near the mouth of the canyon to the Alaskan Inn. This paving is a part of the final phase of work related to last summer’s Ogden City Water Line project through Ogden Canyon.

This work will be conducted according to the following schedule:

·         Thursday June 19, to Friday June 20, one lane will be closed in the canyon with alternating traffic directed by flaggers from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., as crew’s lower utility accesses and make preparations for the paving work.

·         From 8 p.m. on Saturday night June 21, to 8 p.m. on Sunday night June 22, pavement removal and paving operations will be accomplished, with a complete closure of SR-39 in the canyon.  During this closures traffic must detour over alternate routes, such as SR-167, the Trappers Loop Highway via Interstate 84 through Weber Canyon, or via North Ogden Canyon Road, the so-called “North Ogden Divide.”  Access will be maintained for canyon residents during this complete closure. 

·         Finally, on Monday night, June 23, one lane will be closed with alternating traffic directed by flaggers from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., as crews restore utility accesses to their pre-project levels.

Ogden Canyon Construction Update

Construction Activity Update – 11/7/13

The following are planned construction activities. Please note that due to weather conditions, emergency situations, or equipment/supply issues, schedules are subject to change.

• Intermittent flagging operations and/or lane shifts will continue for approximately two weeks for slope stabilization work.  Any flagging operations will occur between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Travelers are advised to use caution and slow down at the mouth of the canyon where the lanes shift and flaggers and workers will be operating.

·         During early November, the city plans to perform structural upgrades to the pipe support structure at the Gray Cliff bridge.  No water service interruptions or traffic impacts are expected with this work.

More Ogden Canyon Cloosures

You have probably already encountered the closures, but here is the latest:

Oct. 2-4:  Alternating one-way traffic will be directed by flaggers at various locations along SR-39 through the canyon for shoulder work (sign and delineator post installation, inlet box maintenance and general clean-up). Restrictions will be effective Wednesday through Friday (Oct. 2-4) from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.  Travel delays are expected to be minimal.

Flagging operations are expected to continue on SR-39 at the mouth of Ogden Canyon through the end of next week to facilitate the replacement of an existing 24-inch culinary waterline.  Alternating one-way traffic is effective on weekdays from approximately 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (both lanes open by 5 p.m. on Fridays). 

Schedule and Traffic Impacts

• No full road closures or night or weekend lane restrictions are planned during construction.
• One-way tra­ffic will be directed by flaggers on SR-39 at the mouth of the canyon on weekdays between approximately 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. (both lanes open by 5 p.m. on Fridays).

• Due to the safety hazard of potential falling rock, the public is advised to avoid the hotpots and surrounding area on the south side of SR-39 in the construction zone.  The area is closed around the clock for the duration of construction and will be closely monitored by law enforcement.  Trespassers will be cited.  Parking is also prohibited on SR-39 in the work zone.

Ogden Canyon Waterline Update – August 16, 2013

A day late, but still very pertinent information below:

If you have had the opportunity to drive up Ogden Canyon in the past couple of days, you probably noticed the great job the contractor did in milling and paving the eastbound lane of traffic last weekend.  This weekend, the contractor will do the same thing for the westbound lane.  In order to complete this work, we will need some closures similar to the closure schedule last weekend.  There has been some confusion as to what days and times the canyon will be closed this weekend, so we wanted to take an opportunity to clarify for you.

Tonight, Friday, August 16^th, the canyon will be closed to through traffic between 9pm and 7am while the contractor removes the top two inches of asphalt through a milling process starting at the top of the canyon.  Tomorrow morning, when the canyon opens to the public at 7am, both lanes of traffic will be open.  However, motorists traveling westbound will be subject to a milled surface, which can be difficult for motorcycles and vehicles traveling at high speeds.  Please be careful and respectful of the other motorists while traveling westbound on the milled surface.

On Saturday night, August 17^th, the canyon will again be closed to through traffic between 9pm and 7am while the contractor completes the milling operation for the westbound lane in the bottom half of the canyon.  When the canyon opens again on Sunday morning, both lanes will be open to the public, but the westbound lane will still be milled, so please use caution.

On Sunday night, August 18^th, the canyon will close to the public at 5pm and will not open again until Tuesday morning at 5am.  The contractor will use this time to install two inches of new asphalt over the recently milled surface on the westbound lane.  During this 36-hour closure, emergency vehicles and canyon residents will be allowed to travel in and out of the canyon.

Starting at 5am on Tuesday, August 20^th, both lanes of traffic will be open to the public during the day and night.  Nightly closures will be in effect from 9pm to 4:30am on Wednesday and Thursday nights while the contractor finishes work on the shoulders, ties in accesses to the new roadway, and installs delineator posts in the canyon.

Ogden Canyon Update

Ogden Canyon Waterline Update – August 8, 2013

I wanted to take an opportunity to explain what will be happening over the next few days in the canyon and what motorists can expect over the weekend.  As I mentioned last week, the canyon will be closed to all through traffic on Friday night between 9pm and 7am Saturday morning, and again Saturday night between 9pm and 7am Sunday morning.  During this time, the contractor will be milling the top inch and a half of asphalt off the eastbound lane from the bottom of the canyon all the way to the top.  Both lanes of travel will be open during the day on Saturday and Sunday.  Please be advised that eastbound traffic will be traveling on a milled surface, with an inch and a half separation between the westbound and eastbound lane.  Please be careful, do not pass other vehicles, and reduce your speed while traveling on the milled surface.  On Sunday night at 5pm, the canyon will close to all through traffic until 5am on Tuesday morning.  During this time, the contractor will pave a 2-inch thick overlay on the eastbound lane from the bottom of the canyon to the top of the canyon.  When the road opens again on Tuesday morning, there will be a brand new surface on the eastbound lane for the whole length of the canyon.  During the closures listed above, canyon residents and emergency vehicles will be allowed to travel in and out of the canyon.

Starting at 5am on Tuesday, August 13^th, both lanes of traffic will be open to the public during the day.  Nightly closures will still be in effect from 9pm to 5am while the contractor prepares for the westbound lane mill and overlay.  The westbound lane mill and overlay will follow the same schedule and process described above on the following weekend (August 16^th through the 20^th).

Ogden Canyon Update

Ogden Canyon Waterline Closure Schedule Update:

I apologize in advance for the length of this update, but there is a lot of information regarding the upcoming schedule and what will happen in this, the last month of construction. 

After months of hard work in challenging conditions, the Contractor for Ogden City, Whitaker Construction, has successfully completed replacing the 100-year old 24-inch water line main in Ogden Canyon, which mostly lies beneath SR-39, the Ogden Canyon State Road.  Even though the new water line is now in service, there is still some work to be done in resurfacing the asphalt on SR-39.  Whitaker Construction has obtained a permit from the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to complete the installation of eight inches of permanent asphalt to replace the temporary asphalt which was placed in the second phase of construction (from The Cobbles to the Alaskan Inn).  In addition to the permanent asphalt, the Contractor will also perform a 2-inch deep rotomill (surface removal) and asphalt overlay on the lane that was impacted by the waterline trench construction, as well as the other lane, which was much less impacted by the construction.  By resurfacing the entire road, Ogden City and UDOT will be able to restore the road's regular maintenance schedule, which will also provide the smoothest ride and the least impact to the traveling public.   The extents of the roadway resurfacing will run from the mouth of the canyon to the filter plant at the top of the canyon.

In order to complete this asphalt resurfacing project, it will be necessary to have some scheduled night and day closures, based upon the following schedule:

·         Sunday, July 28 – Thursday, August 1: 9pm-5am closure

·         Friday, August 2 – Saturday August 3: no nightly closure

·         Sunday, August 4 – Thursday August 8: 9pm-5am closure

·         Friday, August 9: 9pm-7am closure for rotomilling

·         Saturday, August 10: 9pm-7am closure for rotomilling

·         Sunday, August 11: closed from 5pm until 5am on Tuesday, August 13 for paving (road closed all day Monday)

·         Tuesday, August 13 – Thursday, August 15: 9pm-5am closure

·         Friday, August 16: 9pm-7am closure for rotomilling

·         Saturday, August 17: 9pm-7am closure for rotomilling

·         Sunday, August 18: closed from 5pm until 5am on Tuesday, August 19 for paving (road closed all day Monday)

·         Tuesday, August 20: no nightly closure

·         Wednesday, August 21 – Thursday, August 22: 9pm-4:30am closure

·         Friday, August 23 – Saturday, August 24: no nightly closure

·         Sunday, August 25 – Thursday, August 29: 9pm-4:30am closure

·         Friday, 4:30am, August 30: scheduled work completion

Ogden Canyon Update During July 24th Holiday Week

Thanks to our humble reader, Lane Hoyt, who queried the engineering firm working on the Ogden Canyon project, we have this tip hot off the press:

The contractor will be removing the traffic control at 5:00am on July 19^th. Traffic will be open to the public in both directions in Ogden Canyon with no nightly closures or lane restrictions until 9:00pm on July 28^th, at which time the lane restrictions and nightly closures will resume so that the contractor can finish installing the permanent asphalt and the mill and overlay project.

 Travel safe this week.

Ogden Canyon Updates

Dear Ogden Canyon Waterline Stakeholders,

This is a reminder about the scheduled closures of SR-39 through Ogden Canyon over the next few days while the contractor completes paving activities in the first phase of construction. 

SR-39 will be closed to all through traffic according to the following schedule to complete the permanent asphalt paving in Phase 1:

·         Friday, July 12 from 10pm to 6am

·         Sunday, July 14 from 9pm to 5am

·         Monday, July 15 from 9pm to 5am

During the closures listed above, Canyon residents living east of the Phase 1 limits (everyone east of Fairmount Bridge including Fairmount residents) will need to access their homes from the east (the top of the canyon).  We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Ogden Canyon Waterline Project Alert: Independence Day Holiday Schedule

SR-39 in Ogden Canyon will be closed to all through traffic on Wednesday, July 3^rd, beginning at 9:00pm until 5:00am Thursday morning, in order to complete installation of permanent asphalt in the fourth (and final) phase of construction.  During the hours listed above, all Canyon residents living west of Phase 4 (approximate address: 600 Ogden Canyon) can access their homes from the west (bottom of the canyon).  All canyon residents living in the fourth phase of construction will be able to access their homes during the closure, but there may be longer than usual delays because of the location of the large equipment.  Please keep this in mind as you plan your evening travels.

Both lanes of travel will be open for the Independence Day weekend.  Beginning at 5:00am on July 4^th, the traffic control lights and barricades will be removed from the roadway to accommodate the heavy travel for the holiday.  Both lanes of traffic will remain open until 9:00pm on Sunday, July 7^th, at which time the traffic lights and barricades will be moved and one-lane travel will resume in Phase 1 (mouth of the canyon up to the Smokey The Bear sign, approximately) so the contractor can begin removing and replacing the temporary asphalt in the first phase.

Ogden Canyon Waterline Project Update

We apologize in advance for the length of this update, but there is a lot going on with the project right now and we want everyone to be as informed as possible.

First, SR-39 in Ogden Canyon will be closed to all through traffic tonight beginning at 10:00pm until 6:00am Saturday morning, and again on Saturday night, beginning at 10:00pm until 6:00am on Sunday morning, in order to install permanent asphalt in the fourth (and final) phase of construction.  During the hours listed above, all Canyon residents living west of Phase 4 (approximate address: 600 Ogden Canyon) can access their homes from the west (bottom of the canyon).  All canyon residents living in the fourth phase of construction will be able to access their homes during the closure, but there may be longer than usual delays because of the location of the large equipment.  Please keep this in mind as you plan your evening travels.

Also, there were some issues encountered during the last few days stemming in large part from the high demand related to the unseasonably high temperatures.  As such, the upper (and final) connection was not completed during the roaming shutdowns.  Because of the issues the contractor has encountered lately with the temporary water, we would like to complete this connection sooner, rather than later.  In order to complete this connection, another water shutoff will be necessary.  This temporary water shutoff will only impact those residents living in the third and fourth phases of construction, and is scheduled for Sunday night, beginning at 9:00pm and will be in effect for approximately 8 hours.  Water should be restored by 5:00am on Monday morning.  If your water is not restored by then, please let us know so that we can resolve any issues quickly.  This will be the final shutoff of the entire project.

Also on Sunday night, the contractor will move the traffic control back down to the mouth of the canyon to begin removing the old temporary asphalt section and replacing it with 8 inches of permanent asphalt.  The contractor anticipates that approximately 2,500 lineal feet of asphalt will be removed and replaced before the 4^th of July weekend.  The rest will be completed after the 4^th of July weekend.

Lastly, beginning at 5:00am on July 4^th, the traffic control will be removed and both lanes of traffic will be open to accommodate holiday travel.  Both lanes will remain open until 9:00pm on July 7^th, at which time the lane restrictions and delays will resume.

Ogden Canyon Waterline Project Alert:

SR-39 in Ogden Canyon will be closed to all through traffic tonight beginning at 9:00pm until 5:00am Thursday morning, in order to complete a water service that extends across the street.  The location of this closure will be at The Oaks Restaurant.  During the hours listed above, all Canyon residents living west of The Oaks can access their homes from the west (bottom of the canyon).  All canyon residents living east of The Oaks can access their homes from the east (top of the canyon).  We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Also, remember that in order to complete the paving section of Phase 4, it will be necessary to have two additional nightly hard closures at the end of this week: Friday, June 28^th (from 10 pm until 6 am Saturday morning), and Saturday, June 29^th (from 10 pm until 6 am Sunday morning).  During the course of this project, Ogden City and Whitaker Construction have made every effort to keep the Canyon open to all through traffic on Saturday nights.  However, in order to meet a critical deadline, it will be necessary to close SR-39 to all through traffic this Saturday night according to the hours listed above.  We apologize in advance for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Ogden Canyon Waterline Project Alert: 24-Hour Road Closure on Tuesday, June 11, 2013

SR-39 through Ogden Canyon will be closed to ALL through traffic for approximately 24 hours beginning at 8:00pm on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, until approximately 8:00pm on Wednesday evening.  The contractor will need the use of both lanes of traffic to perform a critical crossing of the existing 72-inch Pineview Water line.

The location of this closure will be approximately 1,000 feet west of The Oaks restaurant (approximate address of the closure is 700 Ogden Canyon).  During these closure hours, all canyon residents living west of 700 Ogden Canyon will have to enter and exit the canyon from the west (the bottom of the canyon).  All residents living east of 700 Ogden Canyon will have to enter and exit the canyon from the east (the top of the canyon).   Ogden Valley residents will need to use alternate routes during this closure.  We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

The location of this closure will be approximately 800 feet east of the Wildwood Bridge (approximate address is 670 Ogden Canyon).  During these closure hours, all canyon residents living west of 670 Ogden Canyon (including those residents living within the Wildwood Subdivision) will have to enter and exit the canyon from the west (the bottom of the canyon).  All residents living east of 670 Ogden Canyon will have to enter and exit the canyon from the east (the top of the canyon).   We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Ogden Canyon - closed Saturday morning for Ogden Marathon

Ogden Canyon Waterline Project Reminder:

We just wanted to remind everyone that Ogden Canyon will be closed to ALL traffic tomorrow beginning at 6:00am for the Ogden Marathon.  The canyon will re-open to the public at approximately 1:00pm tomorrow afternoon.
