Ogden Canyon Waterline Q&A with Ken Moffett, Ogden City Water Utility Manager

Why did Ogden City undertake this project in the winter?  The line we are replacing is needed during the warmer months of June through November. In order to meet the consumption needs of Ogden City, our only option is to work during the winter months, which brings additional challenges of harsh weather conditions that often affect workers and equipment.

Why is the project moving so slowly? With warmer temperatures we are now able to manage soil conditions and install about 200 feet of pipe a day, delaying us only five days behind our June 1 deadline. Record cold temperatures posed challenges at the beginning of the project. Equipment start-up times took longer and breakdowns were more frequent. Excessive frost and solid rock compounded the problem, resulting in unforeseeable underground conditions and unplanned night road closures.  A second night crew is being added to help get us ahead of the deadline.

Why so many traffic delays? Unfortunately we do not have the resources available to give real time estimates like the signage you often see along Interstate 15. We are broadcasting delay times through the project website at www.ogdencanyonh2o.com, Twitter@ogdencanyonh2o  and the project hotline at 801-675-8198. We will also be adding updates from employees who will be driving the canyon and logging drive time through the canyon seven days a week.

We knew this project would pose a major challenge, that’s why it has been put off for more than a hundred years. Without replacing the waterline, we would continue to lose over a million gallons of water a day.  Replacement of the line is vital.

We are committed to adapting the travelers’ concerns while staying within the constraints of the project. We thank you for your patience and concern for the safety or our workers and encourage you to email us with any questions or suggestions at ogdencanyonh2o@horrocks.com.

Weber High Basketball Wins Region One Title

Team led by Ogden Valley Boys

The Weber High Boys Basketball team is having a monumental season as they were just guaranteed at least a tie for first place in the Region One conference.  With one game left in the regular season, Weber has a conference record of 7-2, chased closely by Davis, who has a record of 6-3.

Weber plays at Layton on Tuesday while Davis visits Northridge.  A win by the Warriors or a loss by Davis on Tuesday would give the Warriors sole possession of first place going into the state championships.

Weber won a tight game on Friday at home in overtime versus Northridge by a score of 58-57.  The Warriors take a 6 game winning streak into the Lancers home court on Tuesday.

Weber is arguably having the best year since the Warriors won the state title in 1971.  Much like the championship team in 1971 was well represented by Valley Boys, this year's team is no exception.

The Warriors are led by Senior Hayden Schenck, who averages 26.2 points, 6 assists and 3.4 steals per game.  Other Valley boys helping Schenck include Jordan Jones (7.3 points, 5.6 blocks, 2 rebounds per game), Auston Tesch (5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.7 steals per game), Mason Miles (6.2 points, 2.2 rebounds per game), Cooper Cosby and Cole Robins.

Of course we are not prejudiced towards our Valley boys, but 4 of the top 7 players are homegrown Valley Boys.  For that, we offer a tip of the hat to all of the warriors.

For some nostalgia, the 1971 Championship team had a good showing from the valley.  Ron Buhrley, Ron Montgomery, and Chad Green were part of the team.  Greg Graves and  Ryan Jones eventually saw the light, married valley girls and moved to Huntsville.

The 1971 team was recently honored during halftime of a Weber High Basketball game and a nostalgic video was created in their honor.  The video also includes a dunk fest and three point clinic by the 2013 team.

Tip off Tuesday is 7 PM at Layton High School.

Ogden Valley residents tired of being stepped on

Guest Post by Sandi Tuck (promoted from our Facebook Page)
Well, it is time The nerves are shattered, the frustration is at it's peek. The residents of Ogden Valley are again tired of being stepped on
I have lived here over 40 yrs. You never get used to it and it never stops The whole of the Wasatch Front wants us to be the perfect host for their different marathons, group gatherings, etc
That means about every week end you have to be careful where you go or wait while they do what ever. Watch for skiers who have spent a wonderful day skiing with their Bolo Bag. Leave for 2 or 3 days while Ragnar totally creates a mass mess. Rude people who just think you are a detriment in their space.
I spent 30 yrs trying to level the so called playing field. The Board of Weber County Commissioners decided to pass agri (aggravatingtourism, which is not all bad, but has loop holes we will all regret. The Powder mountain group seems to be on target if reality does not hit to hard . The water line in the canyon did not start with a public impact study and so it looks like it is all the same story different day.
Every one is talking about rights, so where are Ogden Valley residents Civil rights?

Yet another Ogden Canyon Update - Canyon to remain open Valentine's Night

Sorry for the many updates, but the situation is unfolding rapidly and here is the latest:

Ogden Canyon Waterline Weekly Update for the week of February 13, 2013:

The contractor has made great progress over the last few weeks, and has now moved back down to the mouth of the canyon to finish the final 600 foot segment of Phase 1.  Once this section is completed, the contractor will pressure test and chlorinate the first phase of the pipeline before putting it in to service.  Phase 2 construction should begin in the next 2 weeks.

In order to accommodate residents and businesses in Ogden Canyon and Ogden Valley, the contractor and Ogden City originally agreed to delay the night-time closure on Valentine’s Day to 11pm.  However, because of the progress that has been made over the past few weeks, the contractor and Ogden City have decided to suspend the nightly closure on Thursday, February 14, 2013, keeping SR-39 through Ogden Canyon open all night.

We again want to recognize Whitaker Construction and Wasatch Barricade for the fantastic job that they are doing with construction and traffic control, respectively.  Their hard work and determination has helped keep the project moving forward and on schedule.

Drive safe, and have a Happy Valentine’s Day.

Ogden Canyon Update

Dear Ogden Canyon Waterline Stakeholder Committee,

Whitaker Construction has made very good progress over the last week, thanks to some very cooperative weather.  Over the next two weeks, they are planning on finishing up the first phase and moving their operation up the canyon to the second phase.  They continue to remain on schedule for the projected June 1, 2013, completion date.

We have added a “Frequently Asked Questions” section to the project website, in order to help the public understand a little more about this project.  Feel free to read through the questions and answers that we have provided at: http://www.ogdencanyonh2o.com/ogdencanyonH2O/ocwlfaq.html

More Ogden Canyon Frustrations - Ogden City Council Meeting Tonight

Guest Post by Kathy Peterson promoted from Facebook

Hi everyone-

Rich and I just came up the canyon on this Friday evening Feb. 2 at 5:30 pm and the traffic going down the canyon was backed up all the way to the Oaks. There was no lead car and there was no flagman.

What are we supposed to do about getting up and down the canyon in a timely manner? Should we call the Ogden Police as this is a problem caused by Ogden city? We certainly shouldn't (as taxpayers of Weber County) have to pay the sheriff to come and take care of the problem. What is this doing to our ski industry when tourists have to try to maneuver this mess.

And what about the lost business for those businesses in the canyon like the Oaks, Alaska Inn and Gray Cliff? The curfew on the week nights is ridiculous-8pm, really? And on the weekend, if you go to the early movie, you still can't make it to the canyon before the supposed closure at 10pm. The times should be 10pm on weeknights and 12 am on the weekends. Half the time there is no evidence of work being done overnight anyway, especially on the weekend.  Does the contractor close the canyon just so they don't have to pay someone to monitor the traffic overnight?

I think we citizens of Ogden Valley deserve more courtesy and accommodation for our inconvenience. I for one will be at the Ogden City Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 6 pm to ask these questions of the city council. Are they going to compensate the canyon businesses for lost revenue due to this project that benefits the citizens of Ogden only? And what about the dangers imposed to us when the canyon is closed and the roads are icy and snow-covered and we are forced to risk our lives to negotiate the North Ogden Divide or go all the way around to Trapper's Loop?

During last week's storm, Rich had to negotiate the Divide where even in 4-wheel drive, he was slipping and sliding around every corner and trying to negotiate around cars that were at a standstill while he went to get help. Please join me at the City Council Meeting if you are ready to confront this situation and ask for some relief from those who have instigated this issue.

Thanks, Kathy Peterson."
